Ripley's First Moose

On Sunday we headed up to Flattop, more to stretch the legs than anything else.

Along the trail we saw something new.... can you see them?

In that picture there is a lady moose on the right and her calf on the left.  See my little arrows?  Look to the middle of the picture from there (might help if you zoom in).  I swear they were larger in person...this means we need to go drop a bunch of money on a telephoto lens for the camera.

We were really excited to see how Ripley would react to the Moose.  When we stopped gawking at them for a few seconds we looked around for our dog and found him up the hill.

Ripley had caught sight of some ground squirrels and was WAY more interested in chasing them than looking at some dumb moose a hundred yards away.

We kept walking along the trail, I stopped to take the obligatory plant photos.

This is not in my book because it's not a wildflower.
It actually looks like a kind of succulent to me, but I could be (and probably am) wrong.
Note the little black berries tucked in there - it's getting to be berry season up in the mountains.  People go crazy for that around here.
Alpine Harebell - they always grow like this, just one little flower all by itself
Red Burnet
I had to double-check this one on the internet because my book says it is only found in swamplands
and we were in the mountains.  Obviously, the book lies.  Also, I really like this flower...one of my favorites.

On the way back, we saw that the lady moose was venturing closer to the path.

See! I wasn't lying! Moose!
Ripley must have caught a good whiff of her because he was definitely interested this time.  They had quite the staring contest:

Eventually, lady moose decided she was no match for Ripley and his obvious toughness, so she wandered off into the trees.  In all, we were pretty happy that, once he stopped chasing squirrels and noticed the moose, Ripley did little else but stare.  If he'd run off in her direction we'd have been a lot more concerned.

This weekend we're going camping! Wish us luck that any animal encounters are equally as uneventful as this one.
